Which level of reading should I choose?

Begin of page section: Contents:

You can choose from four different reading levels:

  • above average reading level
  • average reading level
  • lower average reading level
  • below average reading level

The reading level should always be chosen in regard to the current state of the student’s reading skills. In order to determine a fitting level of reading, we recommend using a standardized test procedure like GraLeV (Grazer Lese-Verständnistest, Paleczek, Seifert, Franz, Wohlhart, & Riedl, in Vorb.) or ELFE II (Lenhard, Lenhard, & Schneider 2020).

Be aware: The evaluation of the reading level is a current snapshot and can change!

GraLeV is a tool that is available in print and digitally to quickly and efficiently assess reading comprehension of Grade 3 and 4 students. Soon the GraLeV will be available on this homepage for download.  The test measures reading skills on word-, sentence- and text level (2 subtests for the level). These individual measures can be joint to a general reading skill score. The number of correctly solved items (test scores) is the calculated to a percentile rank. This shows how many students of the norm sample solved the same number of items or less items. A percentile rank of 15 mans that 15% of the students showed skills as good or worse than the student in question. 84% achieved better results.

The GraLeV can be used as a group test (whole classroom) and it takes about half an hour.

Within the next months, the homepage will offer the possibility to receive information on the percentile ranks. If you are interested to use the GraLeV before that, feel free to contact us (lisa.paleczek@uni-graz.at)

Alternatively, other standardized reading tests, like the ELFE II (Lenhard, Lenhard, & Schneider, 2020) can be used. This test measures reading comprehension on word-, sentence and text level, too.
